Colonial change which is also described as “stress of change” has led to social disorganization and cultural disruption (Craig R. Janes et al. The health consequences of such changes are rapid and could lead to cultural disruption, role confusion, social disorganization and cultural identity conflicts. This type of stress is implicated in the development of various health problems: alcohol abuse, suicide, diabetes, hypertension and other chronic illnesses like cancer.
Practices that support Decolonization
Retaining intellectual power and being able to control information, histories, cultural knowledge is one way of aiding decolonization. This allows such communities to control their information and artifacts. Education is a major tool that can be used to aid decolonization. Different authors retain their intellectual power and speak in one voice through education to address inequities and advocate for indigenous knowledge system.
