Japan as “Multiethnic|”: An Exhibition at the National Museum of Ethnology
Redefining japan as “Multiethnic”: An exhibition at the National Museum of Ethnology in spring 2004 by Eika Tai.
According to Eika Tai, the author analyzes the increase of the multiethnic and multiculturalism in the japan exhibition. The presence of many minority groups of people living in Japan has resulted in the undeniable fact that the region has various ethnicities. The foreigner in japan mainly consists of Taiwan and the Korean, resulting from the previous colonial subject, these groups lost the Japanese nationality in World War II. However, later on, there was an increase of foreigners in Japan due to the shortage of labor, which highly resulted in the ethnic landscape.
The research was conducted by the students and the researchers from the Minpaku and other surrounding colleges to address the argument. The study also included the minority ethnic communities' people who live in Japan(Hwang, 2016). The research was faced with challenges, especially during the recruitment of the participants. The Minpaku hesitate to participate and support the analysis since they thought they could not exhibit their collection in a museum that was not theirs. They were later encouraged by one of them (Kim Miseon), who was part of the project.
