Life Experiment on Fear and Stress Response
Overcoming fear and managing stress is a challenge to several individuals. Fear often breeds anxiety when it becomes out of control. As an individual, I have experienced panic on several occasions. In some instances, I even found myself frozen and unable to move because of fear. Creating a life experiment by making a plan, taking actions within the program, observing and documenting outcomes, analyzing experiment and describing conclusions help in reporting in the findings obtained from the life experiment. I made observations in the responses provided by my classmates and came up with a list of fears that relate to my life alongside their perceptions. These included creating a plan of the concerns documented in the responses and commenting on suspicion of being judged, taking exams, going through interviews, fear of failure, fear of social isolation, and public speaking.
Fear of being judged is shared among several students. I as an individual often prefer conforming to the mob mentality as opposed to expression of personal ideas. I have often kept quiet even in situations where I would have talked my intention to bring a difference. Responses from fellow students indicate that most people fear to look stupid or like a fool when they differ from the opinions of the majority. Therefore, for them to avoid the bizarre experience, they keep quiet. These people become stressed when they are unable to express themselves. They will give wrong answers just to appeal to the status quo. I have been in a group meeting where everyone was asked to be honest on their views relating to alcohol consumption. The experience was traumatizing since everyone in the room had engaged in alcohol at one time or another. It was easy for them not to see any problem with it but I could not defend my stand since I feared I would be judged by my peers later
