In the novel, Jennifer Egan explores the morality and immorality struggles of personality that Sasha in the novel is going through, and it also questions the availability of invisible goons in people's lives who take control over them. There is a relentless passage of time in the lives of individuals. The theme in the book is time and memory, and it is an in-depth assessment of the passage of time, the effects that aging has on the lives of individuals, and longing for the past through memory.
In chapter one of the book, a young woman named Sasha is introduced, and she is on a date with Alex. Sasha is standing in the bathroom in Lassimo Hotel, and she notices a woman’s wallet, which is on the floor, and she has the urge to steal it (Fladager, 2020). The wallet's owner is in the bathroom in one of the stalls. Sasha makes fun of the blind trust that the woman has. In her thoughts, Sasha thinks that even in New York City, if you give someone a chance, they will steal the hair off your head. Sasha decides to take the wallet, and as she is leaving the restaurant with Alex, they see a woman who
