Abstract
The essay intimates on a harrowing experience in my life. A holiday in the coastal region of Mombasa in Kenya nearly turned horrific while I swam in the ocean. The narrative gives details on the happenings of that day.
We were on holiday in Mombasa, a town on the South Coast of Kenya, located along the Indian Ocean. We were with my half-brother, James and his dad, residing in a holiday for a fortnight. The holiday resembled the embodiment of comfort, luxury, eating foreign cuisine, lazily loitering around the Gedi ruins and swimming everyday in the Indian Ocean.
Around five, at dusk, on a relatively sunny day, the coastal beach was strangely empty, besides my relatives. It was liberating, calming and comforting to be unaccompanied on the vast coastal beach, relatively with historical ties to the Arabs and early colonialism. The Arabs named the town, a questionable mix of Portuguese and Arabic words, implying a great place. The place has shrines, forts and earlier churches established by both the Arabs and the Portuguese. Residents intimitate that swimming around, this time, purifies one from adversities, and the ‘gods’ protect one from evil.
As I began to swim in the cold waters, soaring over waves, I went further into the ocean, leaving my friends behind. I wore a black short and a white vest because the area is relatively hot during the night. Furthermore, the residents had misguided beliefs on foreigners and their way of life.
