My Philosophy of Nursing.
I chose to study and practice nursing after I discovered my innate empathy and compassion for the ill. I believe it is my calling to help people and I feel drawn to it. Nursing gave me an opportunity for empathetic expression and an opportunity to save lives. To me, nursing is the practice of taking care of a patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual health. It is a discipline acquired not only through formal education but through life experiences.
The first person who influenced me to study nursing was my mother. She indirectly awakened the nurse in me by the way she always showed affection for the sick and always knew what to do whenever I was feeling unwell. Her ability to treat ailments impressed me at an early age. She taught me basic first aid and encouraged me to study biology by buying me children’s books. I first showed an interest in caring for others as a minor in junior school. A pupil once fell off the stairs and injured their hand against concrete. Most of the other pupils were frightened and ran away from the sight of blood the screaming victim. At such a young age, I discovered innate confidence as I approached the injured pupil. I calmed the pupil down as I used a clean handkerchief to cover the bruised hand while asking a fellow pupil to get a pack of ice. Our teacher got alerted about the situation and took it from there. She was keen to congratulate me for my courage in front of the group which, I mentioned that I had shown courage and compassion at a young age and potential of caring for public health.
