Introduction
Harm reduction are policies and plans that intend to reduce the harms or damages that are associated with utilization of psychology related drugs in people that are active and are not willing to stop (Glaser, 2014). On the other hand, drug abuse is the habitual or recurrent taking of the illegal drugs or the drugs that have been prescribed over the counter which may result into negative consequences. Embracing harm reduction acts as a tool that assists medical practitioners in reducing the effects of drugs that are brought about due to addiction. This paper therefore intends to investigate the relationship and practices between drug abuses and harm reduction (Initiative, 2007).
Instead of using the old methods such as forceful taking of patients in rehab centers, many medical practitioners prefer the approach that entails motivational interviewing, short term psychotherapy and harm reduction (Glaser, 2014). These approaches specifically harm reduction limits the negative consequences of drug abuse in professional manner. The technique offers practical approach to solving behavioral and emotional challenges which is different from the old approach that compels the addict to forcefully abstain from drag or substance abuse (Glaser, 2014).
There are several principles involved in the harm reduction approach that actually contain the drug abuse phenomenon (Initiative, 2007). For instance, pragmatism recognizes that there are possibilities that there is always a certain percentage in the community who will indulge in certain risk behavior due to challenges posed by economical, social and health reasons. Another principle associated with harm reduction approach is focusing on the harm. Under this principle, reducing negative consequences of drug use is given priority (Initiative, 2007).
