The Obesity Hunger Paradox
People become obese for various reasons. Their dietary choices and lifestyles are potential causes. As it happens often, it comes with no surprise that hunger and obesity depend on people’s economic situations. They are real problems in society, and an in-depth review of what happened in South Bronx can reveal the intersection between hunger and obesity. They result from poverty and unavailability of healthy food choices, and interventions that increase healthy food options are necessary as well as nutrition education.
Poverty is a leading cause of obesity. Hunger and obesity result from malnutrition, which is a common problem in low-income neighborhoods. While trying to analyze this relationship, Dolnick (2010) mentions that the lack of money to buy quality food is a leading cause of poverty. It is the same reason why many people in South Bronx were obese as of 2010 since they could not eat healthy foods. From this connection, a different way of looking at hunger emerges. It comes out in light of food insecurity, considering that people cannot afford the basics. They cannot go to the grocery to get food and cannot get fresh produce too.
