Introduction
Social media can be defined as applications or websites allowing people to share their information, including photos, creating content with others in the public domain, and providing social networking services. Social media come in varied forms and include LinkedIn for professional networking, Pinterest, which provides bookmarking services, Twitter for microblogging, YouTube for video sharing, and Facebook and Instagram for photo-sharing and social management, among others (Buzzetto-More et al., 2015). All these social media platforms have inherent concepts revolving around enabling a user to share information. These inherent concepts facilitate an individual's participation and social expression in varied ways. Oversharing on social media occurs when an individual shares too much personal information on these social media platforms. The oversharing may be detrimental to the individual as they are highly susceptible to cybercriminals.
Oversharing occurs in varied dimensions such as sharing hate messages, posting completed birth dates, sharing home address and financial information, over-posting personal pictures and family and friends, sharing every move, and posting inappropriate pictures like being intoxicated. These social networking sites started as means to enable people to connect with their family and friends. However, with the evolution in technology, the sites have advanced and having a wide range of uses, from information sites and advertising platforms to game-playing sites (Paullet and Pinchot, 2012). With the broad social media platforms, my research narrows down to Facebook, as it is the platform with the most number of users, estimated at 2.7 billion users globally as of 2020. It is worth noting that as technology keeps advancing, social networking sites and social media are also advancing.
