Sex, Space, and Social History in Titian’s Venus of Urbino
Historians have always deduced that sexual behavior has never changed just like human biology from the Titian’s time to the present world. According to Titian’s belief, every aspect of sexuality was inherited and portrayed the traditional culture. Drawings are done of newly married couples especially women which they referred to as Sacred and Profane Love. The pictures were at times shown nude to represent the lady’s beauty and to express love to the beholder. Marriage is meant for procreation and a sign of transition where the woman leaves her father’s house and moves to the husband’s as seen in Lotto’s (Venus and Cupid). After marriage the woman’s lifestyle changed by the way she dressed and how she stored her garments in her husband’s house.
The man was the master of the household and the entire compound in the Titian’s world as the picture depicts. A dog does not even bother to bark at the person entering the compound indicating he is not an intruder, but instead the owner. Titian’s heroine is portrayed as immoral and does not possess the appearance anticipated of an ancient goddess as she publicly shows off her body which actually is pornography in today’s world. Human biology depicts again as Mars sleeps and Venus remains alert after the sexual intimacy between them which is always usual. There is a contrast in morals between the Olympian woman and the Titan’s. The former is a prostitute and trades for sex as the picture reveals the women tired and exhausted compared to the Titan’s who is alert and welcoming
Immorality is also evident according to (Titian’s La Bella) where the women were employed as models and still got involved in the old profes...
