Shamanism in the Yanomami Culture
Introduction
Culture and traditions have been part and parcel of many communities for several centuries and continue to be passed down from one generation to the next. These cultural beliefs have been deeply embedded in the existence of these communities and tend to define and distinguish them in the society. The old and wise people are usually the ones primarily tasked with enforcing and sharing these beliefs to the other members of the society through story-telling sessions and in advocating for distinct ways of life that have been practiced by members of that particular community for generations. One particular community that has managed to remain steadfast in the practice of its cultural and religious beliefs is the Yanomami tribe found in the northern Amazon region between the border of Brazil and Venezuela. Apart from living simple lives, the Yanomami people are particularly renowned for their religious affiliation called shamanism which thrives on spiritual connections. Shamanism has been part of the Yanomami people for many centuries and continues to influence their way of life. The essay paper therefore seeks to examine the significance of Shamanism among the Yanomami people and how they continue to practice it in the modern day and age.
