Language in Hong Kong has been one of the things that has made labored effort to cope with the city’s rapid development and diversity. The major language in Hong Kong as with mainland China is Chinese. However, English has also been moderately embraced. The state of bilingualism in Hong Kong has previously been described to demonstrate features of diglossia without bilingualism but that was way back in 1982. Currently, people between the six year of their first decade and those in their fifth year of the sixth decade describe their language competence as very good or to the very least, good. This age group makes for 87.7% of people in Hong Kong and the language in question is a threat of Chinese langue originating from Guangzhou in the Southeastern region of China. Regarding English, the number lowers to 66.9% and the evaluation from good and very good to above average or average (Hong Kong, 2016). The competence between Cantonese and English is therefore different with a Cantonese bettering English with a margin of 20.8% (Raymond, 2015).
