Suicide
Suicide is a medical issue where an individual attempt to take their own life. Suicide is always linked with a tragic response to stressful life circumstances. Individuals of all age groups can commit suicide. According to Hogan and Grumet (2016), it is a severe public health issue that can have long-lasting impacts on families, individuals, and communities. People who want to commit suicide portray many symptoms. Firstly, they talk about suicide by making statements like "I am going to kill myself." Such people even go to the extent of purchasing or acquiring means to take their own lives, such as buying pills or guns. Secondly, they suddenly withdraw from any social contact and want to stay alone. They start to have some antisocial behaviors by isolating themselves from their family and friends. Thirdly, some begin to use drugs or alcohol exclusively and change their regular patterns. Other symptoms include feeling hopeless, mood swings, doing self-destructive things, personality changes, and saying goodbye to people. Nevertheless, warning signs are not always obvious as they vary from one person to another. Some individuals make their suicidal intentions clear, while others keep their suicidal feelings and thoughts secret.
Various clinical risk factors are common for suicides and people attempting suicide. For example, individuals with current and past major mental illnesses such as PTSD and depression are significantly suicidal. Also, people with personality disorders such as antisocial behaviors, narcissistic, and borderline are at a higher risk of committing suicide. Such people would commit suicide for attention or to punish people who have hurt them. People who have attempted suicide before are also likely to try again. Ahmedani et al. (2017) assert that some individuals may not fully recover from suicidal thoughts, causing them to attempt to retake their own life. Furthermore, people with substance abuse problems are at significant risk for suicide. Drug abuse and alcohol can worsen suicidal thoughts making a person feel impulsive or reckless enough to act on his/her feelings. Additionally, some people who experience stressful life events such as breakup, sexual or physical abuse, loss of a loved one, legal and financial issues tend to have suicidal feelings. Lastly, a person may be at risk of suicide if he/she has a family with psychological disorders, violence, suicide, or substance abuse.
