The article, Encountering Development: The Making and Unmaking of the Third World emphasizes on developing the undeveloped sections of the world, particular the third world countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. In chapter one, Introduction: Development and the Anthropology of Modernity, Harry Truman call on the United States to help solve the problems in the underdeveloped areas (Escobar, 2011). Approximately half of the world’s population live in poverty with adequate food and vulnerability to diseases. The rate of poverty in these areas is a threat both to the underdeveloped and developed areas. Therefore, there is need for more developed nations like the United States to help the poor areas in Africa, Asia and Latin America to develop and fight poverty (Escobar, 2011). Generally, the article’s main theme is reducing poverty by developing some of the most economically disadvantaged parts of the world especially in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The article Harry Truman introduces the concept of ‘fair deal’ which involve equal development opportunities across the world as the way the world can easily achieve sustainable development (Escobar, 2011). Sustainable development can be defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This implies that, for nations to promote sustainable development they must devise strategies and plans that would ensure that no one lives in poverty and that resources and distributed equally so that everyone has access to them. Currently, studies show that the developed countries including the United States, France among others account for only 26% of the global population but owns 76% of the world economy. These countries remain highly developed, with citizens having enough basic needs, access to health security and other social amenities while the remaining countries accounting for 74% of the world’s population struggle with poverty (Escobar, 2011).
There is need for uplifting the impoverished part of the world, especially the third world countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa where people still lack access to good health, food, education and proper housing. To achieve sustainable development, the developed countries like the United States need to help the struggling third world countries grow and expand their economies to help them reduce poverty and set a developmental foundation where the future generation can be fully independent (Escobar, 2011). This would imply increasing access to education, employment opportunities, improving and expanding infrastructure, enhancing access to primary care and promoting general access to social amenities.
