Movie Review
The fault in our stars is an American movie, based on romance and comedy. It was released back in 2014, with Josh Boone as the director and with several film stars who served supporting roles. Woodley acts as Hazel Lancaster who is the main character, a teenage girl aged sixteen. She has battled with cancer, and trying to both live an ordinary life at sixteen as well as struggles with how it will be for her parents when her death finally knocks.
Hazel’s mother forces her to go to a cancer survivors support group. Here she meets Augustus Waters who is a year older. Augustus has a type of cancer that could cause him lose one of his leg and in turn wear a prosthetic. However, his cancer has a higher survival rate than Hazel’s death sentence. Since the very first day the two meet, Hazel and Augustus are practically inseparable.
The two characters have a thing for novels, so exchanging novels was what they did from the day of meeting. An Imperial Affliction is a book that ends up being a favorite volume to Hazel, as it reflects the basis of their relationship. Hazel requires Augustus to read it and in turn Augustus requires her to read a book that is the beginning of one of his best video game. The two bond over the book since the author does not provide a conclusion regarding what becomes of the characters, therefore, they had a desire to know how the story ends CITATION Jos14 \l 1033 (Boone, 2014).
Augustus and Hazel start an adventure together, in pursuit of the author to the book, known as Peter Van Houten because they had burning questions and only he was in a position to provide answers. Hazel has been the one doomed to die, but there is a turn of events. Scans from doctors reveals that Augustus whole body is filled with cancer. Augustus finally dies, and Hazel spends the last days of Augustus’s life in pain. The film makes one keeps smiling and at times you are forced to mourn and leaves you wishing it will play for longer CITATION Jos14 \l 1033 (Boone, 2014).
Initiating
At the initiation stage, there is the initial contact and the conversation opens CITATION Ric15 \l 1033 (West, 2015). Hazel’s regular doctor, had earlier advised that she needed to attend a particular weekly support group for cancer survivors because she was swimming in a total clinical depression. Hazel did not like the support group at all, she describes it as ‘depressing as hell’. They met every Wednesday in an episcopal church, where they sat and shared about progress, how they felt about cancer, death and several other aspects. This Wednesday morning, was just like others where Hazel and the mother had to really negotiate about the support group attendance, and to make the mother happy Hazel attended. At the support, Hazel was struck by a stare from a good looking young boy who he had never met before in the group. Every time Hazel looked back, Augustus was staring. From the look in Hazel’s eyes, it was awkward and in turn the girl decided to make it a staring competition. It was clear the two had a spark. After the support group meeting, Augustus and Hazel had some time to talk, although Hazel did not seem to be very friendly for a start. For girls, we would say she was playing hard to get, yet her eyes spoke it all ‘I like Augustin’ CITATION Jos14 \l 1033 (Boone, 2014).
Experimenting
Experimenting focuses on learning about each other CITATION Ric15 \l 1033 (West, 2015). Hazel’s mother comes to pick her as it was the norm. Hazel walks to her mother, tapped the window, and said to the mother that she was going out with Augustus Waters. The mother was surprised, at the same time happy to learn her daughter has finally had a chance to socialize. Augustus drove away together with Hazel. The drive was one of a kind, chatting and laughing like people who met each other decades ago. Hazel was sharing her cancer experience, and the cancer diagnosis since she was thirteen. They finally got to Augustine’s home, got a movie and they had a lot much to know about each other. As they shared their interests and hobbies they two discovered they shared a novel reading one CITATION Jos14 \l 1033 (Boone, 2014).
Intensifying
Intensifying involves having several common aspects that keep a couple together CITATION Ric15 \l 1033 (West, 2015). Augustin and Hazel exchanged their favorite novels. Augustin really liked the ‘An Imperial Affliction’ and kept texting Hazel about the intense like. Hazel too liked the Novel given to her by Augustin and for some time the sharing about the novels helped them realize there were many more things they had a similar liking for and came in terms with the reality of falling in love CITATION Jos14 \l 1033 (Boone, 2014).
Integrating
Integrating involves developing habits that a couple can do together CITATION Ric15 \l 1033 (West, 2015). After finishing ‘An Imperial Affliction’, Augustus reveals frustration due to the novel’s sudden ending. Hazel asserts to Augustus that the novels mysterious author is known as peter Houten and resides in Amsterdam. They both try to write to him enquiring about the novel’s unclear ending. The author expresses his willingness to only respond to the questions in person CITATION Jos14 \l 1033 (Boone, 2014).
