Introduction
Social media platforms such as Tumbler, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter have characterized contemporary world forms of expressions and communication. The propagation of the internet has led to the rapid growth of social media usage. The increase in numbers of social media usage has sparked a debate about whether it has a positive or negative impact in the society, especially to the younger generation. Social media plays a significant role in promoting long-distance relationship and interactions among people. However, social media has adverse effects such as addiction and invasion of privacy. Teenagers form a majority of social media users. Consequently, it is crucial for parents to know the positive and negative side of social media. Social media has a combination of both good and bad sides.
According to Common Sense Media of 2015, teenagers spend an average of nine hours daily consuming online content (Washington post). Moreover, according to a less scientific approach I took by studying the behavioral patterns of teens in my family, I found that the content they consume in the social media affects their behavioral tendencies and lead to an identity crisis. The social media sites make the young to live a world of virtual reality. The young one's perceptions of life no longer remain practical. The young ones want to live a flashy life according to pictures and videos of their peers, which they view on social media. Consequently, social media has resulted in unwarranted completion among the youth and young adults who form the majority of subscribers to social media networks. Parents should take caution and monitor their children use of social media.
