The Significance of Diversity in Higher Education
Diversity is the inclusion of people from different cultural backgrounds, such as race, gender, age, religion, political ideologies and physical abilities, in the activities of a given organization or group. A diverse society contains individuals who have learnt to understand and live with each other regardless of the differences that exist between them (Morrison & Grbic, 2015). When individuals of different abilities, cultures, and beliefs come together, there is always an improvement in the level of knowledge of these people since they will get to share more, thus, learning various new ideas. The consideration of diversity in higher learning institutions is critical because it brings about diverse impacts to the lives of the students. Some of the significances of diversity in higher learning institutions include helping the students in learning how to associate with people from different backgrounds, promot0ing critical thinking and unity, challenging the existing stereotypes, promoting excellent performance among students, and preparing them for the outside world.
Diversity helps the students to learn how to associate with other people. When universities and colleges ensure that there is diversity in their student population, the students in these institutions will get to meet different types of individuals with different characteristics. These students from diverse social, racial and religious backgrounds will interact with each other on one occasion or another. These interactions empower the students with the ability to live with different types of people who are not even their relatives (Silman, Askal, & Gazi, 2018). It is believed that students who learn in institutions that value diversity ends up being flexible individuals who can easily fit in and survive in any society without having to struggle. Therefore, this form of socialization is essential to the college and university students who are soon expected to finish school and might get employed in organizations that consist of different types of people. The diversity in these universities and colleges, therefore, lays a firm ground for the students to be able to work effectively in a global society (Eberhardt, 2015).
