Millennials at the Workplace
For the first time in American history, as Espinoza, Ukleja and Rusch (2011) point out, workplace demographics now covers three generations, from the Baby Boomers, Generation X and now the Millennials, also known as the Generation Y. A generation can be defined as a cohort that shares birth years and significant social and historical life experiences (Artkins, 2004, p.27). These experiences tend to influence an individual’s outlook toward organizations and authority, what they value the most, and how the person plans to satisfy his needs (Adam, 2004; Hill, 2002). This shift implies that employees as young as 19 years old are finding themselves working side-by-side with workmates who are as old as 50 years and above, each of them harboring diverse perspectives about their workplaces, bosses and co-workers, careers, and lifestyles.
