Music is a powerful weapon that can be used for good and evil. Throughout history, music has been used as a means of cultural and social influence, and Adolf Hitler's Third Reich was no exception. Music had a direct impact on Hitler's character and beliefs, and these beliefs and opinions influenced his politics during the reign of horror (Cathcart 56). His belief in the brilliance and purity of the Aryan race is directly reflected in his art and entertainment policy. The government of the Third Reich imposed strict policies on "acceptable" music, composers and performers. From 1933 to 1945, Hitler's Nazi Party [Democratic National Socialist Workers Party / NSDAP] used music as a tool to build German political unity (Cathcart 54).
