The Gut Girls by Sarah Daniels
Sarah Daniels' The Gut Girls takes after the ladies of Deptford Foreign Cattle Market, who work for 12 hours every day slashing meat for London's numerous butchers. The ladies procure a good living, yet they are abused and mistreated, stuck in an apparently not exactly attractive lifestyle, until the high class Lady Helena chooses to enhance, empower them and show them how to be fitting women, preparing them for an existence as serving young ladies. In any case, this is a long way from a change; London high class society is not for everybody, and the extreme young ladies of the cows’ business sector do not do well there.
In Gut Girls, financial abuse, particularly for ladies, is the main impetus of the play's activity. All through the play, Daniels illustrates how monetary oppression is connected inseparably with class mistreatment. Notwithstanding their commitments to plot, these two powers shape the focal centre of the writer's study of patriarchy.
Quite a bit of Gut Girls' theatrical vitality is derived from the crash of social situations, values and ways of life between the gut ladies, the Lady Helena and Lord Tartadens of Victorian England. The playwright uses intense scenes to show the class difference between Lady Helena and the gut girls. Despite the philanthropy of Lady Helena, she also tends to distance herself from the gut girls. This is evident when she instructs her maid to burn all the clothes she wore when she visited the sheds for a mare reason that she found blood stains on her gloves. Edwin on the other end tries to intimidate Maggie in exchange for sexual favors.
