Being a soldier comes with an array of challenges and some these challenges are difficult to everyone. Apart from trauma caused by occurrences like war and destruction, physical scars are part of the experience. I have learnt how to interact with different personalities and to derive the best values therewith. Setbacks and calamites that I have learnt to encounter in my profession have elevated the spirit to defend my country more aggressively. The training provided to me by my employer have prepared me to deal with the psychological effects of war and apart from the traumatizing encounters, I have been coping well in the industry to live my dream.
Conditions of my injury
I am currently a wounded warrior and I have been undergoing treatment from my bed back in my city. It was a bright summer afternoon in March this year when the officer in charge made a call to respond to emergency. We responded to the call speedily and assembled in the designated area to receive orders. I was part of the team that received orders and dispatched to rescue children in a building that was on fire in New Orleans. The children were trapped and the storied building was fast catching fire. The flames were proving difficult to quench as the fire-fighters were present on location. The backup by the army was necessary to save the children and property within the shortest time possible. I was assigned the duty of accessing the basement where there were estimated seven children who were stranded and possible choking in the smoke. There was no time to lose as the fire was spreading gradually irrespective of the furious water emanating from the hosepipes.
It was in my attempt to rescue on child who was crying desperately at one corner of the basement that one flame caught my leg and consumed by garment all the way to my skin. I was determined to ensure that the small girl arrived outside the building safe and in time to breathe in fresh air again.
