However, the most frequent exam finding is expiratory wheezing, and this is common even in exacerbation or in the presence of other diagnoses. However, asthma may still exist even in the absence of wheezing because even patients presenting with asthma that has not progressed to acute stages may lack wheezing and the condition can only be recognized by chest hyperexpansion, retractions, and accessor muscle use (Durham et al., 2017). However, in case the patient is presenting with severe asthma exacerbations, the most common physical exam finding can be hypoxia, tachypnea, tachycardia, pulsus paradoxus, tripod position, or even an imminent respiratory failure with no wheezing.
