Adaptive Strategy Can be Defined as The Use of An Anthropologist
According to Yehudi Cohen, Adaptive strategy can be defined as the use of an anthropologist to explain the society's system of economic production. He argued that there is a connection between economic features and social features in organizations. Cohen used five adaptive strategies to show how a society's social is linked to economic features (Kottak, 2014). The strategies are;
1 Foraging- societies that are foragers rely on nature for a living. The amount to get as food depends on resource distribution and environmental variations. They form bands, and the division of labor is based on gender. There is minimal use of technology in these societies, and the economy grows slowly.
2 Horticulture- the societies that depend on horticulture do not use land, labor, capital, and machinery intensively. They use simple tools and simple land preparation techniques. The economy also grows slowly in these societies.
3 These societies use human labor, practice irrigation, terracing, and other advanced farming techniques. Production is high, and there is employment, improved standards of living, and other economic benefits.
4 Pastoralism- the societies have herds of domesticated animals, mainly used as food. The economy also grows slowly due to a lack of economic benefits like employment.
