         Healthcare is among the sectors that enjoy the new technological developments in information technology to handle health records and enhance communication among healthcare professionals. Other areas in healthcare that witness technological influence includes patient monitoring devices and robotics that aim at enhancing the quality of care and patient experience. The paper is an annotated bibliography of telehealth technology to improve safety and quality standards in nursing.
           The Covid 19 pandemic changed the social interactions owing to the rate of infectivity in the recent past. There is a need to minimize the duration and frequency of exposure of nursing staff to the infected clients regardless of the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE). Telehealth is one of the modalities that ensures that patients and nurses interact virtually with minimal face-to-face interaction (Monaghesh & Hajizadeh, 2020).
Telehealth enabled healthcare staff to evaluate, triage, and follow up patients with a minimal follow-up of exposure. Nurses only encounter clients with it is inevitably necessary. The modalities available include synchronous, asynchronous, and remote patient monitoring. Synchronous telehealth modality allows for real-time patient-nurse interaction through technology such as telephone, audio-video via smartphone, computer, or tablets. Asynchronous entails “store and forward” technology through messages, images, data collected at an interval and responded to or interpreted later. Digital health record system facilitates asynchronous telehealth as healthcare staff can retrieve the information through secure messaging. Remote patient monitoring allows direct transmission of patient clinical measurements from a distance to the nurse other parties of interest (Monaghesh & Hajizadeh, 2020). Telehealth proves a crucial information technology inclusion that will continue to thrive during the pandemic and beyond.
Understanding the contribution of telehealth in the quality and safety of care requires a review of evidence-based journals. Capella university library has a limitless database of evidence-based peer-revied journals readily available for use. The inbuild customized search engine, summon, allows access to diverse databases such as ProQuest Central, EBSCOhost, PubMed Central, and Directory of Open Access Journals. The search engine filters and ranks the articles and journals based on the keywords. The keywords “telehealth nursing,” “telemedicine nursing,” “telemonitoring,” and “e-Health nursing,” “virtual nursing care.” The filters include peer-reviewed journals, limited to within five years of publication, and subject “medicine” and “nursing.”

Telehealth and eHealth in nurse practitioner training: current perspectives. Advances in medical education and practice, 8, 399. The systematic review journal focused on the perspectives of the use of eHealth and telehealth in the training of nurse practitioners. The gap identified was the benefit of telehealth in providing accessible and cost-effective nursing care hence the need to integrate it in NP training. The authors sourced journals from online databases such as CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central. Limited information exists regarding the educational programs in telehealth. 11 studies met the inclusion criteria, that is, six highlighting formal university programs while five described short continuing education programs. The topics that emerged included the definition of telehealth, telehealth etiquette, regulations, interprofessional collaboration, security/HIPPA, ethical considerations, reimbursement, and user satisfaction. The popular approach to the learning process was deductive, while some institutions used experiential simulation learning. The authors deduced that a multimodal approach in training enables students to develop necessary knowledge, skills, and comfort suitable to embrace the integration of telehealth in nursing care. The preclinical aspect of telemedicine use influences the choice besides meeting the inclusion criteria. The journal highlighted the importance of including telemedicine technology in training so that nurses can appreciate the relevance when in practice.

Assessing the impact of telemedicine on nursing care in intensive care units. American Journal of Critical Care, 25(1), e14-e20. The journal focused on a gap created by the limited information about the contribution of tele-intensive care in nursing practice. Using a national benchmarking survey of nursing care through intensive care telemedicine, the researchers conducted a 2-phased study. The benchmarking survey evaluated the perceptions of intensive care telemedicine. A modified 2-round Delphi identified the priority nursing areas. Of the 1213 participants recruited in the online survey, 63% acknowledged improved efficiency, 65% improved collaboration, 63% improved performance, and 60.4% enhanced communication. The nurses were able to monitor trends in vital signs, determine the physiological status of clients, administer medication, and improves care safety. However, challenges deduced include technical challenges associated with video and audio, negative perceptions, attitudes of staff, and interruption of care. The second phase of the study highlighted nursing priorities such as critical thinking skills, mutual respect, intensive care experience, and emergency care of patients as ranked by 60 nurses. The authors concluded that telemedicine contributes to the coordination of care. Clinicians working in ICU can consult experts to promote the quality of healthcare.

The journal focused on the progress of telehealth in nursing care in the healthcare reform era. The systemic review journal highlights the shift in priorities and external pressure to deliver quality care. The journal acknowledges the need for healthcare to adopt systems that meet the current care demands and congruent with the technological advancements in information technology. The authors reviewed the need for telehealth services, emerging trends, and factors influencing the integration of eHealth. The findings indicated increased access to quality and affordable primary and specialty care through the adoption of telehealth.
