Introduction
The assessment of a newborn baby in the first five minutes is essential to determine the needs of the baby as at that time and thus respond to them appropriately. Studies have shown that there are some children born with defects that when realized immediately after birth can be rectified and a baby leads a normal life thereafter (Rüdiger et al., 2015). APGAR score has been used as an evidence-based tool in the assessment of the baby in the first minutes following birth. APGAR score tool has therefore been an effective tool in the assessment and management of babies in their initial stages of life after delivery (Park et al., 2018). The purpose of this paper is to discuss about Apgar scoring tool and how it is used in the assessment of newborns in their initial minutes of life.
