The APRN Consensus Model Author Affiliation Course Instructor Due Date The APRN Consensus Model The Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification, and Education (LACE) impacts APRN education, certification, licensure, credentialing, and clinical privileges (NCSBN, 2022). The purpose of the Model is to unite nursing programs, state board of nursing, and national certification in the manner in which they define the role of APRN with an aim to leveling the standards that APRNs face in both their education and application for licensure and certification (ANCC, 2021). To do so, the Model looks to address challenges resulting from the determination of licensure and scope of practice at the state level, which limits APRNs’ ability to practice to the full extent of their training. For instance, when an APRN moves from one state to another, they face different licensure requirements, which may limit their practice. The APRN Consensus Model defines six populations of focus: individual/family throughout the lifespan, pediatrics, neonatal, psychiatric mental health, adult-gerontology, reproductive health/women’s health (Doherty et al., 2018). There are areas of possible overlap in practice in the APRN Consensus Model, particularly in specialties outside of population foci, such as palliative care, oncology, and substance abuse (ANCC, 2021). The Model allows an APRN to specialize in such an area on the condition that one must first receive training, national certification, and state licensure for a designated population. Overlap can occur where an APRN from one population focus (say family nurse practitioner) and another from a different population focus (say a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner[PMHNP]) focus on a similar specialty (say substance abuse). However, APRNs specializing in specialties outside of population foci do not receive certification in these fields.
