Banner’s Five Stages of Clinical Competency
Introduction
During the development of clinical skills, nurses often pass through five different stages which usually prove their capability and competency in what they will do. All these stages are critical in the redevelopment of the skill and greatly contribute to the background of the nurse. The stages include Novice, Advanced Beginner, Competent, Proficient and finally Expert level. These stages are vital in the process of developing a new skill.
The Journey to Expert Level as said by Banner
In nursing, most researches have explained how nurses acquire skills with five phases which determine whether they can or not be qualified for the skill. The steps range from being a postulant and going all the way to an expert. This theory can be a concrete foundation for ascertaining the capability of developing and fully acquiring skills as a nurse(Moradi, 2016). This hypothesis builds the basis of the beginning and the end of the nursing skill cycle and is purposeful in determining the expertise of the nurse, creating reflective thinking, and creating a scope where the performance of the nurses can be evaluated and conclusions can be made in regard of the performance of the nurse.
