Basic Characteristics of Qualitative Research
Purpose of study: The purpose of the study by Walsh, Meagher-Stewart, and Macdonald (2015) was to develop a substantive theory regarding how mothers choose foods for their preschoolers.
Research Design
The qualitative research design allowed the researchers to understand the causal relationship between parental decisions and food choices of their children. The nature of the study is exploratory; therefore, a qualitative design allowed the researchers to identify the different perspectives on the food choices of children. Sample Selection
The researchers used a purposive sampling approach to identify the participants. Purposive sampling allows researchers to select participants with specific characteristics or experiences (Moule & Goodman, 2015). The researchers used age as the main selection criterion. Therefore, they targeted mothers who were between 23 and 48 years old and had children between 3 and 5 years. The purposive sampling approach enabled the researchers to achieve their objectives because it ensured that they targeted the ideal population for their study.Data Collection Methods
