Cervical cancer screening among women and adolescents
Introduction
Human papillomavirus is also known as the HPV is the most commonly sexually transmitted disease in the United States. The HPV is the cause of cervical cancer. Statistically, it is estimated that 6 million new cases are reported every year while nearly 20 million American females are normally affected. Studies show that the younger the females the higher the risk of infection. This is because females in their 20s are prone to have more sexual partners as compared to women in their 40s and 50s.
Design of study
An online qualitative study was conducted on random Latina and other American women in the United States to determine the rate which cervical screening was carried out among them and it was discovered that Latinas had the least number of pap smears as compared to women from other ethnic groups.
Sample size study
500 women filled out questionnaires online .235 of the participants were Latinas while the rest were from other ethnic communities that lived in the United States.100 of the 235 had health insurance while the rest 135 did not have insurance.70% of the Latina women were aged between 18 and 40 while the remaining 30% were 40 years and above. We decided to concentrate on the 70% since they had a longer lifespan as compared to the remaining 30%.
Independent/dependent variable
Some of the variable factors that were considered were. Marital status whether one was married, single, divorced or widowed. The level of education that is if they had an education or did not and if so what level they had reached. Type of employment for example if one was a club worker they were more prone to having more sexual activity as compared to those who worked in factories or schools or hospitals. Age of the participants this was crucial since transmission of cervical cancer was more prevalent in women of ages between 18 and 25. All these things determined someone’s social status and also sexual practices.
Measurements
The independent variable in the study changed in behavior and so a nominal scale was used since all the variables were categorical and discrete in all manners.
Data analysis
Findings were extracted from each study, as much as possible. As these were categorized, the main investigator and the team of investigators decided that the data referred to certain broad areas of inquiry. Once these areas were identified, the data from studies was organized around these themes, further categorized, and presented in rank order.
RESULTS
Qualitative research is often criticized as biased, small scale, or lacking rigor; however, when it is carried out properly it is unbiased, in-depth, valid, reliable, and credible. In qualitative research, there needs to be a way of assessing the “extent to which claims are supported by convincing evidence hence the need to carry out clinical tests to verify data.
Strengths of the study
• Data usually are collected from a few cases or individuals so findings cannot be generalized to a larger population. Findings can, however, be transferable to another setting.
Limitations of the study
• ...
