Several studies show that there exists an interconnection between post-traumatic stress disorders and (PTSDs) and the risk of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and osteoarthritis. This paper will focus on the clinical evaluation of an elderly patient previously diagnosed with MS and osteoarthritis. MS is a demyelinating autoimmune illness of the brain and the spinal cord. On the other hand, osteoarthritis results from the wearing down of the protective cartilage on the ends of the bones. Apart from suffering from the above autoimmune disorders, the subject is also going through a period of grief, isolation, loneliness, as well as natural changes because of old age. The combination of these factors makes the patient vulnerable to the risk of PTSD. Studies show that PTSD can enhance the risk of infections in patients suffering from autoimmune diseases.
In that context, the primary objective of this study is to promote both problems solving and nursing care providers concerning the patient’s case. The format of this paper will entail two conceptual frameworks: a)using Miller’s Functional Consequences Theory to analyze the dynamics influencing the physical health condition of the patient and b) identification, evaluation and implementation of nursing care by using Lavett-Jones’ Clinical Reasoning Cycle.
