Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy (CP) refers to a nonprogressive disease affecting the brain that starts during the prenatal, neonatal, or during the early postnatal period when the neuronal connections of the brain are still developing (Rosenbaum et al., 2017). The secondary effects of spasticity on growth could, however, be progressive. There could also be additional disturbances of perception, sensation, cognition, behavior, and communication, neurogenic bowel/bladder, sialorrhea, GERD, feeding, and difficulties in swallowing, and/or epilepsy (Little, 2017). CP can also be referred to as a group of heterogeneous conditions that involve permanent nonprogressive central motor dysfunction affecting muscle tone, movement, and posture (Glader, Barkoudah, 2019). These conditions come about secondary to the abnormalities of the developing fetal brain from many causes. The impairment in motor function in general causes limitations in functional abilities as well as activity that can be of various severity (Glader, Barkoudah & Bridgemohan, 2019). The current classification of cerebral palsy is in regards to motor impairment, anatomic distribution, and functional level (Rorenbaum, 2017). The prevalence of CP in developed countries is 2 to 2 per 1000 with a slight male to female predominance (Hirtz et al., 2012).
`The pathophysiology of CP varies depending on the etiology. It includes obvious structural lesions of the brain or lesions that are less visible resulting from prenatal, neonatal and events in the postnatal period (Jacobsson & Hagberg, 2014). Other factors like toxins, multiple births, infections, and maternal health also influence. There is resultant hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy as a result of a severe compromise in oxygen and/or cerebral perfusion during birth trauma (Glader, Barkoudah & Bridgemohan, 2019). Inflammatory conditions such as maternal infection and fever can also
