HOW SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH FOR OLDER ADULTS ARE IMPACTED FOR THOSE LIVING IN POVERTY.
The factors responsible for helping older adults maintain good health as they age are generally classified as social determinants of health(SDOH). They are economic, social, and environmental factors that impact the well-being of individuals such as access to medical attention, financial stability, housing and education. (Pooler 2018). For those living in poverty, the impact of SDOH-related factors is more glaring leading to higher mortality rates and lower life expectancy.
Instinctively one might think that access to health services is the biggest factor that affects older adults. While access to proper health care is important other factors play a pivotal role in the health of other adults especially those living in poverty(HPA 2018). Social and economic factors such as access to food with adequate nutrition, a healthy living environment, education, and income are inequalities that affect the health of older poor adults.
