Case study 1: Barnabas Medical Center
1 What were the driving forces behind the success of this collaborative effort?
The collaborative efforts succeeded due to collaborative leadership by Dr. Tony. Collaborative leadership is skillful and intentional management of associations that allow others to succeed independently while attaining a common goal. Dr. Tony chose to use collaborative leadership to solve the issue of long waiting hours in the emergency department. This collaboration was successful since it aligned people’s actions in the hospital to solve the problem. The other driving force was the need to provide effective and efficient care to patients, which could only be achieved through systemic change.
2 What were the "boundaries" that posed challenges to this collaborative effort?
The major challenge was that service delivery in the ED was fragmented; that is from an assortment of stakeholders and departments. That was the culture existed in the hospital, thus it would be thorny to alter such a culture that had operated for long. In addition, Dr. Tony had power to command implementation of systemic changes. None of the departments reported to Dr. Tony directly.
3 Who were/ are the leaders? What characteristics do you think were played by the leader (s) of this collaborative effort that led to its success?
Tony was the leader who got into collaboration with managers from various departments. Being the leader, Dr. Tony demonstrated authorship, responsibility, commitment, capacity to build trust, good facilitation skills and a catalyst nature; to maintain their efforts until they attained the common goal (Lank, 2006).
4 Discuss the factors that contributed to the success of this collaborative effort.
The factors that enabled success of these collaborative efforts include: inclusion of every stakeholder in problem solving and decision making, more involvement in implementation, elimination of key issues and trust build between the involved parties (Lank, 2006) For example, partakers were encouraged to contribute solutions to the issues they raised in the workshops. Dr. Tony also held a meeting with managers from various departments to evaluate how operations from one department affected other departments; in addition they also conducted a workflow analysis. In addition, Dr. Tony maintained the workshops and discussions with managers and clinicians until they attained the common goal.
Case study 2: Willow Springs Memorial Hospital
1 What were the "boundaries that posed challenges to this collaborative effort?
The government announced a reduction of Medicaid expenditure by 22% since it was experiencing a shortfall of the budget. Willow springs get almost one third of its revenue from Medicaid, thus this cut would be injurious. The hospital did not have capacity to conduct most recent procedures in medicine since they were not advanced technologically. It is problematic to change a culture existing in a corporation; for example introducing new technology. In addition, the hospital is likely to struggle raising their revenue since most of it came from Medicaid. However, these challenges can be tackled through collaborative efforts.
2 Who were/ are the leaders? What characteristics do you think were displayed by the leader (s) of this collaborative effort that led to its success?
Dr. Till is the leader in collaboration with medical staff member, hospital board member as well as county health department director. The features that Dr. Till displayed of a collaborative leader were capacity to build trust. By keeping the stakeholders engaged and involving people in decision making reveals contextual intelligence. Dr. Till also reveals intellectual thread since he understands the underlying problems. He also displays strong network by engaging stakeholders as well as the residents. Dr. Till also displays the trait of a collaborative leader by unremittingly pursuing transparent decision making; he involved various people in this collaborative process. Dr. Till revealed passive aggressiveness since he was very committed to resolve the issues that the hospital was facing.
