Concept determination and analysis in caring science
A concept can be defined as a scientific activity with abstractions that are composed of unchanging and the essential elements of an object. It is a mental image of an idea (Patricia et al, 2009). Concept analysis is a method that belongs to the analytic philosophy, as a logical analysis that strives to be an impartial investigation.
An ideal concept is, as a result, of research while a practice concept is concepts used to describe the reality. Concepts are contextually bound tools for communication. In nursing, both approaches are needed for a deeper understanding of the patients. Using the Eriksson’s model of concept determination, one can be able to find the appropriate steps on how take care of the patient (Katie, 2010).
Concept of comfort
This is a state of ease and peaceful satisfaction with maximum pleasure. From a nursing point of view, comfort can be described as the ability to provide for the patient enabling the patient has maximum pleasure. Nurses should provide environmental comfort to the patient, relieving them of pain and discomfort. Comfort activities should be correct, supportive and protective of the patient’s environment. Comfort is divided into classes; the first class, second class and the third class. In the first class, the main issue is for being in a comfortable environment. In the second class the need for the relief is from discomfort while the third class comfort should provide education and inspiration
In nursing, comfort is an essential concept. The application of comfort in nursing is different from that of other fields because nurses work in a therapeutic. Nurses should take note of all the three issues in designing their environment and establishing their nursing objectives. For patients who are very sick, their environmental setting should neither over-stimulate nor burden them. The nurses should provide an environment that is supportive to those patients who are recovering by removing any discomforts. All the three senses of comfort should be part of the working environment for a nurse (Kathanne et al, 1991).
The amount of comfort can be measured in the nursing environment, due to the fact that the aspects of the therapeutic context are related to a sense of comfort. By assessing the behavior and condition of the patient, it is possible to measure the level of comfort of a person. The nurse should be able to know if a patient is satisfied and if not by seeking evidence of his/her comfort needs.
Concept of caring
Caring can be defined as the value and attitude that becomes a will to show compassion or concern for other people. This is a process of relating to someone that involves the development and is made up of two concepts; caring and being in place. The caring theory has been developed over the years within the nursing sector. Caring in nursing is described by a complete view of the world. The nursing care should be provided for both the patient’s basic needs and for his/her values and treasures.
Caring in the nursing world is much different from other fields. The nurses’ intentions should correspond with the caring theory. Caring incorporates interconnectedness, contemplation, insight, intergrading and completeness. Interconnectedness is a concept that represents coyness in approaching the patients, reaching their world and knowing how to be supportive of them. This ensures the patients and the nurse develop a caring relationship (Albertine et al, 2012).
Contemplation involves the analysis of a situation attentively with the aim of getting to understand it. This allows a state where the nurse can bond with the patient and have an inner awareness with the patient, considering the patient in caring. Intergrading involves interacting with the patient through using one’s original creative ability in giving care to the patient. Completeness involves having an open awareness to the situation. ...
