First aid is the assistances offered to a person suffering a sudden injury and illness. On the other hand, cardiopulmonary resuscitation commonly known as CPR, is a procedure performed in an emergency as a technique of saving life where someone's breathing or heartbeat has a problem. CPR is usually done by compressing the chest, so as to create an artificial circulation of blood while pumping it in a manual way through the heart and thus the body.
Training in first aid courses such as CPR among others should be a requirement for college’s graduation due to several reasons. Among them is the fact that when the graduates are aware of CPR process, they are in a position to save a life. Research has shown that the personnel's who cater for emergency medical services responds to many cardiac arrests that happen out of hospital annually. Therefore, training in administering CPR can make a difference because more lives will be saved even before people suffering from cardiac arrests are taken to the hospital. Performed research indicates that less than one in every three cardiac arrests victims receives the CPR assistance (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2011).
Another significance of training the college’s graduates in administering CPR is that this is a mere skill taught quickly. CPR, being a shorter and a lesser detailed discipline can save a lot of time and money if introduced to colleges (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 1998).
