REASONS WHY GOVERNMENTS SHOULD DISCOURAGE SMOKING?
Current research shows that almost one-third of the population is cigarette smokers (Hirshbein, 2015). The situation indicates an alarming rate with the fact that the dangers of tobacco found in cigarettes are known. The government has indeed done much but still there is a need to do more to improve the situation and avert the effects of the same. This essay seeks to elaborate reasons why governments should do more to discourage smoking.
Cigarette smoking has been a leading cause of many diseases and more so the most lung cancer that is responsible for many deaths among the affected. Consistent use of cigarette causes infertility, and general body harms (Pagano, 2015).
Cigarette smoking during pregnancy has also been known to cause adverse effects both on the infant and the mother herself. It causes low birth weight and if worse infant mortality. In case the babies get to then, they usually have many other complications and just to mention one asthma. Mothers and, in general, the supporters of the child find it much hard to take care of the baby because of the high medical cost associated with the same and thus reasons for the government to discourage smoking.
According to United States (2014), addiction caused by tobacco smoking is a threat to the individual and the entire nation. It leads to the high expenditure of resources as money used in productive projects is diverted and used to buy a cigarette. Many family breakups happen due to financial constraints that result from mostly expenditure on drugs, a cigarette being one of them.
Smoking has been known to be the principal contributor to school dropouts amongst teenagers. Students skip school and go in search of money to support their smoking habit.
