Depression is one of the prevalent mental illnesses among adolescents today. Research done by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that the onset of depression occurs during the adolescent stage (Bernaras et al., 2019). In teenagers, depression can negatively affect their behavior, emotions, and social life. The effects commonly associated with depression include agitation whereby teenagers with depression often portray their feelings through anger because they are not able to properly reason. Another effect is sleeplessness; too much thinking can cause sleep deprivation. Also, low grades at school; a student with a diverted mind cannot concentrate in class, thus missing most of the classwork (Bernaras et al., 2019).
External Stressors Associated with Depression
According to Bernaras et al. (2019), depression is characterized by constant irritability, sadness, and social behavior change. At least 250 million people have been affected by depression, 15% being teenagers aged 15-29 (Bernaras et al., 2019). Depression is common among adolescent teenagers since it is underreported.
