Disabilities Involved in Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism disorder spectrum is associated with some disabilities as revealed in the victims. Victims may have a Learning Disability; the disability covers those individuals who demand little support to have an effective life and those who need continuous support throughout their lives (Flores et al., 2013). Children have difficulty in communicating using their respective languages and also the inability to maintain conversations. Adults in this category may have difficulty in understanding social norms and can at times be found conducting themselves inappropriately. Persons in this spectrum may display poor ability to remember certain things as they are people who need constant reminders (Brookman-Frazee et al., 2010). Victims have difficulty engaging in mutual speech; they tend to have events of trivial speech which are non-comprehensible. The affected individuals may have poor sensory organs and therefore, cannot feel pain or heat. The lack of good senses occasionally makes them succeptible to fire accidents.
Characteristics of Asperger’s Syndrome and Classic Autism
Asperger’s Syndrome
1. Language
Kids with Asperger’s Syndrome have a retarded development of language. The children portray unique speech repetition and sometimes speak in a peculiar manner. Some of them use their languages in inappropriate ways, especially when they are conversing with their age mates (Flores et al., 2013). Kids suffering from Asperger’s Syndrome mostly give less facial expression and have little eye contact when communicating with other people. The kids tend to have difficulties in mastering non-verbal communication such as learning how to communicate through body expressions (Donaldson and Zager, 2010).
2. Socialization
Kids with Asperger’s syndrome may have poor interaction with other people. Interacting seems hectic to them as they find it confusing and tiresome. On the other hand, the adult victims often desire to interact and be part of others, but their problem is on how to start the conversations. The individuals may exhibit fewer feelings of empathy making other people to refer them as socially unfit persons (Donaldson and Zager, 2010).
3. Persistent Behaviors
Individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome have an inflexible preference to non-important routines. The victims often get preoccupied with particular things of less importance. For example, children may get obsessed with books that make victims of Asperger’s Syndrome possess unique talents and dominate in intellectual abilities.
Classic Autism
The characteristics of Classic Autism are almost similar to those of Asperger’s Syndrome, but the symptoms tend to be more severe.
1. Language and Communication Challenges
Individuals with Classic Autism may show complete dumbness, or may communicate using uniquely formed vocabularies. The victims find it hard to use the normal language in communication. These individuals can have the ability to speak at late ages beyond two years (Hundert and Van, 2009). The victims often repeat grouped words unintentionally, a condition known as Echolalia. The individuals have difficulty in communicating requests, and at times may end up giving orders when they fail to properly administer voice intonation. Victims also show the lack of eye contact in conversations, and cannot turn quickly when their names are called out (Brookman-Frazee et al., 2010). Victims have no sense in the use of gestures and pointing and tend to lose the skills of language at any age.
2. Social Skills
Persons with Classic Autism have difficulty about the general social behaviors. These individuals relate poorly with their peers and show hate to playful habits such as touching and cuddling. These individuals apparently lack the ability to empathize with others and do not share their achievements with friends or colleagues. The kids relate easily with adults as opposed to their age mates (Dente and Parkinson, 2012). Some victims are clumsy and do not care about the result of their actions.
3. Restrictive Behaviorism
The individuals have a repeated desire for certain behaviors and routines. Equally, these individuals show such routines or behaviors by flapping their hands or moving their feet periodically. Moreover, the individuals desire certain topics that they think can provide the necessary support about one's condition. Kids develop a liking for specific objects or toys that they always want to hold even asleep. Victims are normally aggressive but lack the ability to sense cold and pain (Dente and Parkinson, 2012).
How Asperger’s Syndrome Affects Children in the Classroom
Children with Asperger’s Syndrome have a small deficit in the manipulation of the verbal cues and can only manipulate the short verbal tasks given to the class. The kids have the tendency of taking longer to provide a response to a question in the classroom than their peers. The problem results from the fact that they have shorter working memories and need a longer time before they can think appropriately (Cui et al., 2010).
