Drug abuse is a disease that most people has been caught up in because of its adverse effects on their lives in different aspects such as families, social lives, careers, and also financially. When a person I said to be addicted, it means at that particular moment they are totally dependent on the drug they use and therefore they are most likely to be marginalized and ridiculed. This could cause a lot of harm to the individual even mentally because their lives has started to change for the worse where some people, especially those close to them starts to shun them as they do not want to be associated with a drug addict (Jamil and Niazy, 2016). Drug addiction can happen to anyone because there is no specific age for people to be abusing drugs but, the most vulnerable group is the one who are in high school and college kids. This is attributed to the obvious availability of drug dealers in schools.
Therefore, as a freshman starting out a new life in college, drug abuse is a sure way to ruin your life and also to divert your reason of being in school in the first place. Firstly, you will never be able to grasp what your instructors teach you because your brain need to be given the particular drug and this will surely lead to addiction. Also, once addicted, your body will be always dependent on the drugs and this will in turn affect you financial status and because you are in school and you need money, one might result into stealing and this will land you in trouble with the law. In addition to this, drug abuse will make the immune system to weaken and hence vulnerable to other diseases and it is evident the other issues like disabilities, illnesses and even death result from drug abuse. Research has shown that in recent years, one death in every four is caused by drug abuse (Knopf, 2015).
Moreover, the effects of drug abuse has been seen to reach as far health wise as causing cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and abnormal heart rates. Also, drugs that are administered through injection can cause adverse infections to the blood veins and heart valves and mostly collapsing blood vessels. Furthermore, kidney failure has been witnessed because it is forced to work extra harder than normal, vomiting, abdominal pain and nausea.
