From Chapter four of Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants, the effects of dyslexia on a person are explained in detail. It is a condition where an individual is unable to read and comprehend any amount of text. In most situations, victims of dyslexia are taken as the underdogs the moment they are discovered to be battling the condition (Gladwell, 2013). This is because the minds of most individuals have been programmed to believe that in the competitive world, we have to literally be better than our competitors if we are to be successful in life which is not actually the case. An example of a leader and lawyer who was prominent and had the condition is given in the chapter as David Boies (Gladwell, 2013). Despite his condition, Boies tried even harder and ensured that he made this weakness strength. He instead made use of his memory whenever he heard someone else speak and thus sharpened his ability to listen and retain everything he had heard from other people in his memory. Another example in this chapter is given of Gary Cohn who failed so many times to an extent of deciding to accept him even in situations when he failed thus making his attitude better towards himself. Ultimately, Cohn became an excellent stock trader after learning how to go about stock trading out of necessity (Gladwell, 2013). From all this information in chapter four of this text, Gladwell implies that dyslexia can be seen as a sort of “desirable difficulty”, given the two cases cited and the successes they later came to testify of. I disagree with Gladwell on the grounds I will outline. I am for the position that dyslexia cannot be a desirable difficulty, especially in the current contemporary society.
