Introduction
Recent studies in nursing have shown that Congenital Heart Disease, commonly termed, CHD is a prevalent heart disease that mostly affects infants and toddlers. Studies conducted by the Statistical data have shown that almost 5000 people often undertake heart surgery every year, which is expected to rise in the coming years. However, in the recent past, there has been an improvement of about 3.8% of the mortality rates within South Korea between the years 2000 and 2018 (Lee & Koo, 2020). This research has attributed this improvement in the mortality rates to the development in the diagnostic technology and significant changes within the treatment guideline context, which have been termed to have a systematic and professional postoperative management. In this research, the author has heavily tried to evaluate how a focus shift in the treatment of this illness has aimed to realize the survival of most children by utilizing CHD management to realize long-term outcomes (Carlsson et al., 2019). The paper has also presented a systematic review of how children suffering from CHD often lament poor coping strategies, poor social support, and parenting style that further affect the health of such children. This study evaluates the potent education strategies and content among guardians and parents of toddlers and infants charged with CHD.
Research Problem/Purpose
The purpose of this research carried out by Ryeong and Hyun was to evaluate the educational needs of guardians and parents of toddlers and infants charged with CHD. The researchers have ensured that they place the study problem of congenital Heart Disease within the scope of existing knowledge, as it is clear from the study that they used prior knowledge and lessons to build upon their research. There are significant data and statistics from previous existing understanding that have been used to create the purpose of the study. The study is a significant one within the scope of the nursing field since it will help solve the ever-growing demands to realize solutions to Congenital Heart Disease in toddlers and infants by using an educational approach (Lee & Koo, 2020). Challenges linked to CHD are prevalent in the nursing field, and by the utilization of this study, such an issue will be fully addressed. This research aims to evaluate the educational needs of guardians and parents of toddlers and infants charged with CHD.
Literature Review
There are various significant concepts that the researchers have explored within the context of the literature review. For instance, they have used literature from Statistical Data to explain the concept of needs for education and educational content to the parents of children discharged with CHD (Carlsson et al., 2019). The paper has presented various aspect from this literature such as the need to provide parents with reliable and accessible information and education that will further equip them with a professional understanding of how there could provide care to the infants and toddlers. Other literature has been used to provide statistics on the challenge related to CHD among parents of infants and toddlers discharged with CHD. For instance, previous literature has shown that only 16.4% of parents receive educational information on matters concerning their children's disease management immediately after being discharged (Gramszlo et al., 2020). The references used by the authors are not current. Most of the references have been dated back to 1995 to 2001. The key reason for the authors to use these references could be the need to evaluate the challenges that parents of CHD discharged children were facing, as there was no educational information being offered during that time as compared to today.
Theoretical Framework
The paper has utilized various theoretical concepts related to the study problem of congenital Heart Disease among infants. For instance, the authors have claimed that parents of infants and toddlers discharged with CHD often experience elevated levels of educational needs and stress, especially during the post-hospital period, making them seek assistance on how to provide care and nurture their children. In addition, the study claims that, with the receiving of educational information and advice on their children's disease, parents may have reduced parenting stress through the provision of positive coping behaviors (Lee & Koo, 2020). However, such aspects are merely theoretical and have not been yet proved since they may not necessarily apply to all parents. Most parents may experience many difficulties in executing such educational information, so their parenting stress may drastically increase. In addition, this research draws solely on nursing theory and is independent of ideas from other disciplines (Gramszlo et al., 2020). However, the researchers have failed to state the theoretical framework that has been used in the paper. For my case, the suitable theoretical framework would be the social theoretical framework since the entire article has used a social lens to examine the need for educational information to parents of discharged CHD infants.
Variables, Hypothesis, Questions, and Assumptions
The dependent variable in this research is congenital heart disease among infants and toddlers, while the independent variable is the need for post-hospital education. In this context, the researchers are looking for the possible impacts on the dependent variable if the independent variable is adopted after the research (Dale et al., 2013). In this regard, the solution to the post-congenital heart disease challenges is associated with the growing need for providing parents with educational information. The researchers have then gone ahead to give the operational definitions of the variables which are measurable. The operational purposes of the dependent variable have been given as heart disease challenges among children, and the paper has gone ahead to evaluate various quantifiable aspects of the variable (Lee & Koo, 2020). Similarly, the researchers have clearly illustrated the hypothesis of the paper that predicts the element that will be tested in the article. The hypothesis used states how infants and toddlers often succumb to post-hospital challenges associated with congenital heart Diseases and therefore sets the stage for assessing the immediate solution provided by the independent variable on the need for educational information to their parents on how to deal with the challenge.
Methodology
The researchers opted to utilize a research design that combined qualitative analysis for the interviews and a quantitative study deployed in the online survey (Groves et al., 2011). The used forms of analysis aimed at evaluating the needs for post-hospital educational information among parents of toddlers and infants with CHD. The paper has largely utilized deductive reasoning, which seeks to test an existing theory that parents face parenting stress dealing with discharged CHD infants and toddlers. The deductive reasoning used in the paper has also explained the context of the challenge from a broader generalization to a specific observation, therefore, enabling the readers to fully understand how the provision of educational information to parents of CHD infants will help alleviate the post-hospital challenges (Groves et al., 2011). The sample size comprised 171 patients of toddlers and infants with CHD. The sampling methods used were interviews and online surveys, while the study setting was at Mom Café. The investigators, however, decided to choose a non-probability sample, and therefore the information was obtained from all the respondents (Groves et al., 2011). Similarly, the study used the ANOVA measuring tool that is much reliable and valid since it utilized a statistical program called G power 3.1.7 that is much efficient with a much minimum error expected (Lee & Koo, 2020).
