Syphilis Screening in Pregnant Women
Introduction
Syphilis is a sexual infection caused by a bacteria known as the Treponema pallidum (Dev et al., 2021). Currently, syphilis screening tests are dependent on the detection of the infection’s antibodies other than the direct detection of the bacteria (Dev et al., 2021).
The Screening Tool
In pregnant women, the screening process involves two steps that include the traditional nontreponemal and treponemal tests (Lin & Bean, 2018). They further assert that the two tests are used as the traditional algorithm can have a higher rate of wrong positives which results into the use of the treponemal algorithm to confirm the results.
Nontrponemal and Treponemal in Testing Pregnant Women
The nontreponemal and treponemal screening tool for testing syphilis in expectant women has been always in use. This is because all the pregnant women require the syphilis test early enough when they attend the care in the first time (Torres et al., 2019). In cases where a woman missed a prenatal attention preceding delivery, the test is conducted during delivery delivery (Torres et al., 2019).
