Engaging Nurse Leaders to Understand Professional Roles (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

It is important for nurse leaders to engage with other nurse leaders to understand professional roles. It is expected that you will spend substantial time with your nurse leader, shadowing them in their position, observing them go about their day, and interviewing them.
You will engage with and interview a nurse leader. The interview can take place before, during, or after the shadow period or can be on a different day. Choose a nurse leader who holds a leadership nursing position in their organization who has direct reports (they supervise other employees). Examples of this include: Director of Nursing, Director, Unit Manager.

Nursing Leadership
Nursing leadership is a sensitive area that requires knowledge, skills and experience. Nurses who wish to be leaders should be willing to go the extra mile to gain leadership skills. Nursing has a wide scope of practice, and thus, nursing leaders require more skills and knowledge. Spending time with leaders and interviewing them also gives an insight into their professional roles. This essay reports the results of an interview with a nurse house supervisor in Morristown Medical Center.
The hospital has nurses, doctors, specialists, nutritionists, human resource managers, physiotherapists, and other professionals. Mrs T stated that the hospital offers many services, such as theatre, outpatient, radiology, and others. There also exist special teams that include nurses, doctors, and pharmacists, such as emergency response teams, intensive care teams, and outreach services teams. Such teams require collaboration to work effectively. Interprofessional collaboration improves the quality of care delivered and enhances organizational success (Smith et al., 2018).
Most nursing practices in the last year have changed due to Covid-19. According to Mrs T, telehealth has increased in importance and utilization during the covid-19 period. Patients in self-quarantine and those who fear going to the hospital have invested in telehealth. Telehealth has provided a convenient and easy way of accessing healthcare services (Monaghesh & Hajizadeh, 2020). Family members also seek advice on the care of their loved ones from healthcare providers without having to physically go to the hospital. Telehealth is thus the best practice during the Covid-19 time.
The biggest challenge for Mrs T was to transition from old methods of nursing to the new overtime. Nursing practice is highly dependent on evidence-based practices. Learning is continuous, and new knowledge discovery occurs every day. Technological advancements have also had a significant impact on nursing practice. New technology such as health information systems and telehealth pose a challenge to older nurses because they are not well versed with technology. According to Ryan, Bergin, and Wells (2017), older nurses are valuable in nursing practice but find it challenging to adapt to advancing technology and changing practices.
Coping with the new nursing practices has not been easy with Mrs T. However, she has been dedicated to learning these practices by attending regular training and learning during her free time. As a leader, she also delegates roles that pose challenges to the nurses with matching skills. Ryan, Bergin and Wells (2017) observe that institutions and the government must ensure regular nurses’ training to ensure their nursing practices are up to date. In addition, nurses’ training should be regular and evidence-based.
Mrs T says she loves all aspects of her work. However, she loves nursing because she enjoys helping other people. She also stated that nursing runs in her family because her mother and father were both nurses. Different nurses
