Ethical Dilemma
Introduction
In healthcare, newborn intensive care unit (NICU) parents often face difficulty in making decisions on the withdrawal of treatments that sustain their infants. On the other hand, healthcare professionals face an ethical dilemma of whether withdrawing or continuing care for critically ill pediatric patients. The practitioners have to rely on the projections of longevity, the severity of morbidity, and future quality of life to make these decisions. However, these decisions yield a contradiction between the values of the healthcare providers and those of the parents. Statistically, 60% of parents versus 5% of healthcare providers believe that it is crucial that the latter attempt to save infants regardless of conditions at birth ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"rfwJGXvQ","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Bennett & LeBaron, 2019)","plainCitation":"(Bennett & LeBaron, 2019)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":6707,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/4283279/items/NPQRZJNA"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/4283279/items/NPQRZJNA"],"itemData":{"id":6707,"type":"article-journal","title":"Parental perspectives on roles in end-of-life decision making in the pediatric intensive care unit: An integrative review","container-title":"Journal of Pediatric Nursing: Nursing Care of Children and Families","page":"18-25","volume":"46","source":"www.pediatricnursing.org","abstract":"
