The LGBT community is one of the world's most marginalized communities. LGBT persons confront various problems, including sexual discrimination, stigma, and denial of some human and civil rights ("Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health | Healthy people 2020," n.d.). Despite progress toward equal rights over the years, the group still faces various disadvantages that impede engagement with the larger population. Discrimination is typically perpetrated by persons who hold the superiority of specific sexual acts in high regard. Compared to their heterosexual counterparts, LGBT community members are less likely to use public services, and health care services are no exception.
Factors for Failure to Use Health Care Services
Biological Factors
LGBT community members, like any other human being, need a better healthcare system. Understanding their sexuality can help them do this. In light of biological factors such as aging, elderly gay couples dealing with illnesses such as HIV do not have access to social support. LGBT people in their prime years are also not covered by health insurance.
Psychological Factors
Homosexuality was historically considered a psychological illness, according to Clark (2015). This classification of homosexuality as an illness contributes significantly to the underutilization of healthcare services. LGBT community members do not use public assistance to conceal their identities. The LGBT community members suffer low self-esteem and despair due to society's persistent discrimination and prejudice.
Environmental Factors
Suburban communities were and continue to be less accepting of LGBT people. As a result, people who identified as members experienced prejudice and a lack of community and family support (Clark, 2015). As a result, persons who identify as LGBT avoid areas where their identity could be revealed, such as health care facilities.
Sociocultural Factors
Stigmatization, violence, homophobia, and transphobia are sociocultural elements that have contributed to LGBT community members' inability to obtain health care treatments.
Behavioral Factors
According to research, behavioral issues such as drug use, mental illnesses, and other dangerous behaviors all affect the LGBT community's failure to use health care services.
