Fall Risk for Seniors in Long Term Care
Nursing homes, skilled nursing and assisted living facilities are all termed as long term care facilities. Seniors living in such facilities are usually 65 years and older. According to Cameron, Bowles, Marshall & Andrew, (2018), of this age group “…30% of those living in the community and 50% of residents living in care facilities will fall...” Additionally, these falls may result in fatality and other injuries among this age group. They may cause death, immobility and pain due to fractures. Due to an increase in the level of this population living in long term care and the number of such accidents in these facilities, it is important to focus on this facilities to assess risk factors and prevention strategies.
When assessing these risks on an individual in this age, one should have a history of any prior falls if they exist. According to Jin (2018), “The best predictor for an increased risk of falls is a history of falls.” Falls have a major effect on patients-not only does it affect their well being , a lot of money is also spent in order to help them heal. This is especially important as this is one condition that can be avoided. In the United States, for example, falls are the leading injury related Emergency Room visit from this age group. Furthermore as a person ages, they are most likely to fall which can lead to fatality. This essay will discuss the risk factors and prevention strategies that can be put in place to reduce falls among these individuals.
