Introduction
Obesity and weight loss are very controversial topics in the modern day. The media has been vocal in illuminating the issue of weight loss across different platforms such as social media, billboards, and TV adverts. People associate their weight loss or weight gain to the kind of foods that they eat. For a long time, there has been a notion that eating fats makes people obese. This concept has made people shy away from eating fatty foods for foods they think will make them slim. Recent studies show that eating fats could be a healthy habit, making people lose weight. Dietary habits have been investigated for a long time to show how well people react to different kinds of food. If taken well, and in the right kind, fats have been proven to lead to weight loss among many adults across different geographical divides. The study in this paper will show how the healthy fats, taken in right amounts, contributes to loss of weight.
How fats reduce weight loss
In their review of diet and nutrition, Swinburn et al. (2004) state that obesity, particularly in developed nations is a factor of nutritional habits of the people living in these countries. Venuto (2003) agrees with Swinburn et al. by showing that there is a huge correlation between the way people eat, the kind of food they eat and their weight. Ideally, people do not like being obese. They struggle to ensure that they remain healthy. Individuals who are overweight struggle to go through basic life motions. They are considered unhealthy and more likely to suffer from lifestyle diseases. To reduce this likelihood, Lisner et al. (1987) point out that most people shun from the uptake of foods they deem to be fatty. They favor other kinds of foods they deem to contain fewer fats. In so doing, most of them end up eating junk in the form of snack foods, and this contributes heavily to their weight gain (Flatt 1987).
The lack of knowledge of the kinds of food people take and the effects these foods have on their bodies is the single largest contributor of fats in their bodies. Dietary habits have been shown to contribute to the majority of health issues amongst many people across the world (Duncan, Bacon & Weinsier 1983). Recent studies (Lawless 2016; Schoenfeld et al. 2015) show how the body behaves when it has consumed different forms of fats. These studies have characterized fats into two types, good fats, and bad fats. The types of fats most people eat, resulting in obesity and weight gain are the former forms of fats. The latter fats are the ones discussed in this paper.
Identifying the correct forms of fats is a delicate balance among people who have no interest or idea in nutrition and diet. Lawless (2015) argues that eating the right kind of fats has a lot of advantages and impact in weight loss. One of the major benefits of fats in weight loss is that it boosts metabolism. Metabolism results in breaking down of food particles faster for use by the body. This process ensures that there are no particles in the body that are not broken down which have the potential of forming fats.
The US national obesity forum (nd) encourages people to eat fats and avoid carbs so that they can be free from type 2 diabetes and reverse obesity. Professor Newton, writing for the public health England (2016) states that caution should be taken when doing so. According to him, the suggestion goes against the known norms and traditional practices of various stakeholders. The approach does not refute that fats consumption is beneficial, it lays a caution on the process and kind of fats people should take to see the desired results.
Another importance of eating fats as noted by Bray and Popkin (1998), that it assists in keeping the skin and hair healthy and improves sleep. Sleep deprivation is among the leading causes of stress and related diseases among adults. People spend their time snacking away and piling up carbs when they should be sleeping and conserving their energy. This daily uptake of snacks is linked to obesity. Studies show that there are a variety of foods that one can take that will give them the right form of fat (Lawless 2016; Prentice & Jebb 1995). Guth (2014), states that people who are metabolically healthy have fat utilization that those who have are unhealthy. The distinction come in the comparison of the kinds of fat that these people take.
The healthy fats are present in oils and some fruits and vegetables (Zurlo et al. 1990; Ferro et al. 2013). One of the common sources of healthy fatty foods is the avocado fruit. Other good examples of fats include olive oil, coconuts, and salmon oil. These types of fats have a great impact on the way the metabolism process works. When they are consumed, they make the body function faster, allowing it to break down various food parts faster so that they can be absorbed into the body or excreted as waste. According to Jenkins, Wolever, &Vuksan, (1989), eating small portions of healthy fats daily could lead to weight loss among obese people. A higher meal frequency increases the metabolism of human beings, reducing the chances of weight gain.
People who eat a lot of carbs in a day are prone to weight gain. Carbs add calories to the body, and if they are not regulated through physical activities such as swimming, running, running among others, they can accelerate the process of weight gain (Guth 2014). A balanced diet is an essential element to a person seeking to lose weight. The proper combination of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats is necessary for the body to grow healthy and shed off unwanted weight (Arciero, Ormsbee &Gentile 2013). The body reacts to the kind of food that a person feeds it.
Obese people struggle a lot in accomplishing routine processes on a day to day basis. For instance, they find that they cannot walk for long distances without getting fatigued and they do not have the stamina to endure long hours of work. In cases where the workload demands much energy, fat people do not have the endurance needed for such kind of work. Mackarness (1990) shows how fat people struggle to accomplish routine undertakings in everyday life. To regulate body energy, a person must take the right kind of foods (Hall, Heymsfield & Kemnitz, 2015). Eating snacks and junk food contributes a lot to obesity and fats in many people across the world.
Obesity is a lifestyle disease (Arciero, Ormsbee, & Gentile 2013). Being fat to the extent that a person cannot function adequately or frequently is deemed to be a form of sickness. The kind of food people eats contribute to how they turn out to be. People's bodies absorb whatever they receive. To reverse obesity, it is important to check out the kind of foods people eat. Other opportunistic diseases such as type 2 diabetes have been documented to favor people who are already obese (Gesta, Tseng, & Kahn, 2007).
Reversing obesity leads to happier lives. A study by Green & Burley (1996) aimed at analyzing the correlation between obesity and how people lived. The results of their research show that fat people had a lower self-esteem in comparison to slim people. Reduction in self-esteem affected the manner by which these people conducted their activities and their output at work. Most fat people are not comfortable with their bodies or their weight. They are always conscious of how the society perceives them, and this lowers their morale and esteem, making them lead miserable lives (Cameron, Cyr, & Doucet, 2010).
Criticism
There have been criticisms of the concept of fats leading to weight loss among various scholars. Soeliman & Azadbakht (2014) point out that eating fats as a way of reducing weight loss is a futile attempt unless the exercise complements other activities. A well-balanced diet is a key to maintaining a healthy body. Eating fats alone will not necessarily make a person lose weight if they are still practicing other unconventional diets. Combining exercise with good eating habits is the single best strategy to losing weight and staying healthy (Hagan, Upton, Wong & Whittam 1986).
Conclusion
The discourse above has reviewed some studies by a different scholar on the subject of weight loss and its relation to fat intake. From the findings, eating fats can lead to loss of weight. Some advantages relating to eating fats and loss of weight have highlighted in this paper. One of them is that fats speed up the metabolism rate enabling the body to break down food particles faster using lesser energy. Fats are also good for a healthy skin and hair. The also aid in proper sleep and relaxation. The appropriate forms of fats that people are encouraged to take include avocado, olive oil, coconuts and salmon oil. Uptake of fats reduces the possibility of occurrence of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and obesity. People who are obese have a low self-esteem. Critics have pointed out that eating fats alone is not a good remedy for weight loss. People should incorporate a proper balanced diet and exercise to remain healthy. Eating fats should be encouraged as it contributes significantly to the loss of weight making people more productive and healthy.
