Case Study on Moral Status
Case Study: Fetal Abnormality
As moral agents, we have obligation to act in a manner upholds our human dignity and the dignity of every human being. The moral status argument on which Jessica and Aunt Maris are proponents views every life as sacred and worth living. Aunt Maria tries to convince Jessica to follow through with the pregnancy and give the Almighty living God to fulfill His intention of giving her a child with disability. Moreover, she encourages Jessica to stand strong and put her mind in the way of being a mother. This point of view of Jessica and Aunt Maria is based on the theory that all humans have equal basic moral status. All humans possess similar fundamental rights and the comparable interests of every individual should count equal in the calculation of determining social policy towards ensuring a fundamental equal worth and dignity (Gibbs, 2013).
Additionally, they are making their point on the basis of their strong belief in religion –making them to be polite and humble over their concern to the fetus and not showing cruelty in how to handle it irrespective of it being a handicapped baby. On the other hand, this could be perceived as a people who don’t have an intrinsic sense of compassion and morality, but rather act and feel as told. For instance, when you act, believe or reason on an issue as per to your belief in Jesus Christ, then the implication could be that if Jesus was a proven myth (or rather your religion false) you would finally feel free to act upon your true desires of being cruel and generally immoral.
Marco seems to be on the fence and ready to go with any decision that his wife, Jessica will pick, while Dr. Wilson is very categorical in giving the option of abortion priority. The moral status theory observed by Marco if he goes on with keeping the fetus to the point of giving birth to this baby is referred as the theory of life. It states that being a living organism is the only criterion for moral status, and there exist no hierarchy of status among those living things which have the moral standing (Steinbock, 2011). Therefore, morality arises out of a man’s direct awareness of his own will to live among other things that do need to live too, and as the moral agents, we as human beings have a direct obligation to other living things by not harming them.
According to Giubilini & Minerva (2012), the theory on the point of view from the different parties in this case study influence the recommendation options on the course of action in different angles. When Jessica and her Aunt Maria holding a strong perspective of the religious approach to this problem by sticking to the view that it was God’s will that she gives birth to that baby and again giving lots of respect to life, they pull back Dr. Wilson’s first option of doing away with the pregnancy. Dr. Wilson proposes that among the various options they may have in hand abortion is both medically and scientifically a wise decision for this scenario.
On the other hand, Dr. Wilson is championing a point of view pegged on the rationality of the situation. That is, if there is any level of consensus on personhood at the beginning or the end of life, then one would concede on the point that locates personhood in his/her rational character and functioning of the human being. Therefore, Aristotle argues that all things have a unique function or purpose and thus it’s a matter of fulfilling that unique function of human being. Rationality makes moral virtues to require the application of reason to action.
I would personality hold on the theory of rationality, that is, arguing on reason to action rather than basing one course on beliefs that can swayed away when a few facts changes or a new belief which seems more convincing comes to place (Giubilini & Minerva, 2012). The rationality approach woul...
