The healthcare industry in the United States has undergone various changes to keep pace with the changing demands of the patients’ population and the health care system. The nurses also are required to enhance their critical thinking and quality of care they deliver. The change requires new or enhanced education to the nurses before and after receiving their licenses. That being said, the Future of Nursing Report (2010) affirms that the educational background and characteristics of the nursing profession require the different educational pathway to entry (Battié, 2013). For example, the nurse students who graduate with an associate degree or diploma are required to enroll in a baccalaureate program either before or after licensure.
Further, to transform nursing education, the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) report developed a strategy that would ensure that the number of nurses, who have been awarded a bachelor’s degree in Nursing, BSN, also referred to as a baccalaureate degree, is increased from 50 to 80 percent by 2020. Even more, Battié (2013) affirms that to alleviate the shortage of nurses in the healthcare, the number of nurses with doctoral are expected to double by 2020. Additionally, the nurses must meet all the requirements that are stated by the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) before entering the workforce.
