Client-Centered theories
This theory does not target any specific group, and it applies to any given psychological situation. In this therapy, the therapist applies a non-directive approach to the patient’s problem (Wood, 2008). Another element used in this treatment is unconditional positive regard (Wood, 2008). This research paper will focus briefly on how the two elements are applied, and why this therapy is most famous in insurance companies compared to feminism and solution-focused therapies. All the other therapies exclusive of client centered therapy use a directive approach when handling a patient (Murdock, 2013). A direct approach means that the therapist engages the patient by asking questions that may steer the patient in a given direction (Murdock, 2013). In direct approach, the therapist also proposes a form of treatment to help the client manage the issue or even relieve some symptoms. Most therapists in many parts of the world prefer to use a direct form of approach compared to a non-direct approach. In client-centered therapy, the therapist allows the client to lead the discussion (Wood, 2008). Also, they do not steer the client in any direction (Wood, 2008). Thus, in client-centered therapy, the role of the therapist is to sit in and listen to the patient. This may apply to some cases if the patient just wants to talk, but most scenarios require for the therapist to try and get some history of the psychological issue.
Another key element used in client-centered therapy is unconditional positive regard (Wood, 2008). This is where the therapist emphasizes with the client and supports the client unconditionally (Wood, 2008). The therapist is required to accept the client and what he/she is going through and display support and care. This element was meant to help patients who in their lives have experienced conditional support and care (Wood, 2008). It was meant to show such patients that there is someone who understands what they are going through, and will support them through every experience. Insurance companies tend to favor this therapy compared to others such as feminism, narrative and solution-focused therapy. Firstly, the therapist is not supposed to make any form of diagnosis or offer any form of treatment, which will be cheap (Wood, 2008). However, in solution-focused, narrative, and feminism theory the therapist makes a diagnosis and when required offers treatment (Murdock, 2013). Client-centered theory takes a shorter period compared to solution-focused, narrative and feminism therapies as the therapist is not required to try and figure or understand the client’s approach to their problems.
A short term of therapy corresponds to a light hospital bill and this is another reason why insurance companies favor this therapy over the rest. Also, client-centered theory treats the patients the same regardless of the presenting problem (Wood, 2008). This means that, the therapist does not consider the history or the cause of the problem.
